Twenny? Cenner? Sanna Claus???

Hi everyone, this weekend here's a little pronunciation lesson. In English, when we have

N + T + vowel

The T is DROPPED. So, we get:

NN + vowel

Vowels in English are : a e i o u and y.

For example:

center ----> cenner

Santa Claus ----> Sanna Claus

twenty ----> twenny

seventy ----> sevenny

ninety ----> ninny

It is also used to CONNECT words.

I went out for dinner in Umeda.

becomes

I wennout for dinner in Umeda.

It is also why want to becomes wanna.

Have a good week,

Phil

You should really make it clear that this is only the pronunciation for certain North American dialects of English and therefore should not be used by anyone learning the language.

In the rest of the world where English is spoken, dropping those Ns in pronunciation would be considered incorrect at best or as slovenly speech, just like dropping Hs or using glottal stops instead of Ts.

Regular readers of my blog will know that I am generally focusing on North American English.

This form of speech is considered CORRECT and NATURAL in CASUAL English.
